The new Basel University building, located on the south side of Petersplatz, was constructed in the period 1938-1946 and designed by the Zürich architect Roland Rohn (1905-1971). Founded in 1460 and endowed by Pope Pius II, the University is the oldest in Switzerland; Erasmus, Paracelsus and Hans Holbein the Younger taught here. Features include pictures and busts of famous personalities and scientists, the entrance mosaic by Walter Eglin depicting scenes from daily life, ten stained glass windows in the hall and a lovely courtyard and water lily pond.
