Adjacent to the Basel University Botanical Garden and the Spalen Gate (see separate entries) is the University Library (Universitätsbibliothek). It was founded about the same time as the University itself and is now housed in a concrete building dating from 1965. Today it has over three million books and writings and includes many incunabula and manuscripts dating from the time of the Council of Basle (1431-87). It also houses portrait reproductions, musical treatises and song books. It is said to be the largest library in Switzerland and has a splendid reading hall.
