Situated close to the city centre and adjacent to the Spalen Gate (see separate entry), the Botanical Garden of the University of Basel was established in 1589. It moved several times and only became established in its present location in 1898. A great place for both relaxation and education, you can even walk through the rain forest. There are some 8,000 diverse plant species, including the giant water lily, and many different greenhouses can be visited, including a Victorian one. The garden is justly famous for its collections of cacti and orchids.
