The site of the Bellinzona Townhall has been the seat of government for as long as records exist. The present building, a reconstruction completed in 1928, incorporates elements of earlier buildings. In the 1490s, when the previous building was enlarged, the distinctive bell tower with its turret was built; the clock was added later. One of the features is the inner courtyard, which is enclosed by ground-floor arcades and loggias above them; these are decorated with graffito lunettes of historic views and scenes by local artist Baldo Carugo. A 19th century Swiss cannon is a reminder of the citys military history.
