The photogenic late Gothic Town Hall was built in 1501/1502 by Gylian and Hans Felder and is now the seat of the Cantonal Parliament. There are two notable external features, the octagonal clock tower where mechanical figures strike the hour and the double staircase, which was added in 1663. The ground floor served as an arsenal until 1789 and there are two attractive 1881 arched friezes above the entrance by Charles Iguel. The panelled Grand Council Hall has the ‘Triumphal Chariot of the Fribourg Republic’ painting. Traditionally dressed farmers’ wives sell produce in the square on Wednesdays and Saturdays.
