Built in the period 1406-1416 by architect Heinrich von Gengenbach, the renovations carried out between 1940 and 1942 restored the medieval appearance of the Rathaus (Town Hall). External features include the frieze, featuring the coats of arms of the Bernese provinces and the ornamental reliefs by Gustave Piguet, from 1940–1942. The inner courtyard has renaissance arcades and a 1941 sculpture ‘Boy with a Whip’ by Max Fueter. Amongst the many noteworthy items internally is the stucco ceiling relief by Otto Kappeler (1940-1942), which depicts the history of Berne from foundation in 1191 to the 1831 establishment of the democratic republic.
