The town of Toffen, with a population of around 2,500, is located approximately 11 km southeast of Berne. Schloss Toffen is a listed Swiss heritage site of national significance and is privately owned. The first recorded castle on this site dates from the early 14th century and the present Baroque castle was built in 1671 by Hans Georg von Werdt. Toffen is well known for its Oldtimer Gallery (see separate entry) and, just 3.5 km south in Rümligen, is the 18th century Baroque-style castle which was once owned by Madame de Meuron (1882-1980), a noted Bernese aristocratic character.
