Located on the site of the former city theatre adjacent to the Kunsthalle, the Tinguely Fountain is one of the most interesting and popular in Basel. Created in 1977 by Swiss painter and sculptor Jean Tinguely (1925-1991), it consists of a number of amusing mechanical sculptures placed in a large water basin. Tinguely’s kinetic sculptures, which contain moving parts, or depend on motion for their effect, are known all over the world and the Tinguely Museum (see separate entry) opened in Basel in 1996. Each of the machines has a name, and they make interesting ice sculptures in winter.
