The attractive town of Thusis (Romansch Tusaun) stands on the west bank of the Hinterrhein River, opposite the village of Sils im Domleschg (see separate entry). A market town first documented in 1156 as Tosana, Thusis is at the confluence of the Hinterrhein and Nolla rivers; it has a population of some 2,700 and is at an altitude of 720 metres. The town was almost completely destroyed by fire in 1845, but it is surrounded by interesting features. Highlights include the 1506 Protestant Church, the new 1965 Catholic Church and the medieval castles of Tagstein (or Nieder-Tagstein) and Ober-Tagstein.
