Some 15 km southwest of Biel, the White Church is located in La Neuveville, which has been described as the ‘Montreux of the Jura’ with narrow streets, old gates and towers. The 9th century church is the oldest monument in La Neuveville and, although its exact date of construction is not known, it was mentioned in documents dated 866 as ‘Capella Sancti Ursicini Nugerolis’. After renovation and extensions it was inaugurated by Bishop of Basle in 1345. Old Gothic frescos, covered during the Reformation, were restored in the period 1988/90 and there is a splendid 1356 pulpit and timber ceiling.
