The Niton Rocks have been in place in the water close to the Jardin Anglais (English Garden) since the end of the Ice Age. The two blocks of stone are nicknamed Neiton and Neptune. The Niton rocks are believed to have served as a place of celebration, rites and sacrifices during the Bronze Age. In more recent history the largest of the rocks was chosen by the famous general Henri Dufour to represent the basis (373.6 meters above sea level) for the land survey of Switzerland and the establishment, in 1864, of his famous 1:100,000 map.
