Located near Sisikon and about 9 km north of Altdorf, Tell’s Chapel is approached by foot from the Tellsplatte hotel on the Axenstrasse road. The present chapel was built in 1879 and is on the site where, tradition has it, William Tell escaped from the sheriff Gessler’s boat. The previous chapel had been a place of pilgrimage since the 16th century, although some sources say the first chapel was built in 1388. Four frescos by Ernst Stückelberger (1831-1903) portray scenes of Tell’s life, including the shooting of the apple and the killing of Gessler. Above the chapel is Switzerland’s biggest carillon.
