The Tell Museum is housed in a Romanesque tower in the village of Bürglen. It contains a comprehensive collection, from over six centuries, of documents, accounts and historic and artistic objects, relating to the Swiss national hero, William Tell. Bürglen, about 2 km southeast of Altdorf, is a charming and very old village which has always been considered Tell’s birthplace. Nearby are Tell’s Chapel (see separate entry), and a 1786 monument by Joseph Benedikt Curiger of Einsiedeln. Elsewhere, a stone cross beside the bridge marks the spot where Tell is traditionally believed to have been drowned while rescuing a child
