The International Telecommunication Union was founded in 1865 and the Monument in Berne was erected in 1922. It is the centrepiece to Helvetiaplatz, which is surrounded by museums. It is the work of the Italian sculptor Giuseppe Romagnoli (1872-1966) from Bologna, who won a competition for its design. The central figure portrays World Telegraphy, with figures around representing subjects such as family, labour, suffering and fertility. The commemorative plaque, with all members at that time, dates from the anniversary year of 1965. The monument was restored in 2001-2003.
