The Teatro Sociale was built in 1846/47 and is Switzerland’s only remaining 19th century theatre. Said to have been inspired by La Scala in Milan, it was designed by the Milanese architect Giacomo Moraglia (1791-1860). Built in typical Italian Classical style, it has an elegant façade decorated with four pilasters on the upper level. The theatre’s appearance remains unaltered after restoration, which took place in 1894 (which included the addition of a restaurant), radical refurbishment in 1919 under the architect Enea Tallone (1876-1937) and recent extensive restoration and modernization. Teatro Sociale reopened in 1997 and seats 300.
