The only institution of its type in the country, the Swiss Collection covers theatrical history through the ages, from Greek amphitheatres such as Epidauros, through theatre in Shakespeare’s day to the present. One of the highlights is the viewer-operated large-scale theatre models, complete with mechanism and scene changing. The focus is on the history of the Swiss theatre, which is outlined by the permanent exhibition ‘Theatre Present and Past’. The collection also commemorates Adolphe Appia (1862-1928), the Swiss pioneer of modern stage design, well known for his many scenic designs for Wagner’s operas. There is also a specialised library.
