Zernez is situated about 33 km southeast of Davos at the entry to the Swiss National Park, famous for its natural landscape and its variety of Alpine flora and fauna. The oldest in Central Europe, the park covers an area of about 172.4 km² (66.6 miles²) and varies from 1,400 to 3,200 metres above sea level. The park opened in 1914 and visitors should visit the new National Park Centre in Zernez, opened in June 2008. The excellent website gives full details of the park, which is open from June to October and houses deer, ibex, chamois, marmots and golden eagles.
