The Swiss National Library was established in 1895 and, since 1931, has been housed in its present large building south of the Communications Museum (see separate entry). It was created to build a collection of Swiss publications, dating back to the creation of the federal state in 1848 and today houses more than five million documents that are available to the public. It also houses special collections in the Swiss Literary Archives (established in 1991), Print and Drawings and in the Dürrenmatt Centre in Neuchâtel. Special temporary exhibitions are staged.
