The Suworow monument is located near the Devil’s Bridge (Teufelsbrücke), about 3 km north of Andermatt. It was erected in 1899, the centenary of the battle which took place here on 25th September 1799 between Russian soldiers under General Suworow (1729-1800) and Napoleon Bonaparte’s forces under Claude-Jacques Lecourbe. It commemorates the Russians who died under their 70-year-old commander. The Russians advanced and captured Altdorf, but the 14,000 survivors, after great hardship, eventually had to leave Switzerland on the 11th October 1799.
