The village of Sumvitg, at an altitude of 861 metres, is located some 17 km northeast of Andermatt. First documented in 1175 as ‘in Summovico’, it has a population of around 1,400 and incorporates the hamlets of Surrein, Rabius, Laus and Cumpadials. Features include the parish church of St John the Baptist and the Casa Maissen and Casa Schmidt. The unusual 1988 St Benedict chapel was designed by the architect Peter Zumthor, winner of the 2009 Pritzker Prize for architecture. Other local features include the Punt Russein Bridge between Sumvitg and Disentis/Mustér, Laus Lake and the Rabius, Surrein and Cumpadials churches.
