The Stade de Suisse was opened on the 30th July 2005; it is the third stadium on this site and the most modern in Switzerland. It was clear from the beginning that an arena for sport alone would not be a financial proposition and the development had to be multi-purpose. Consequently the venue is not only a 32,000-seater stadium, but also a shopping and business centre which can also be used for concerts and other events. The construction cost was 350 million Swiss francs. The stadium roof is the world’s largest solar power station at this type of venue.
