St Peter’s Island became famous in the 18th century through the writings of Jean-Jacques Rousseau (1718-1778), who spent time there in 1765. He wrote ‘In all the delightful places I have stayed in, I have never felt true happiness as on St. Peter’s Island in the middle of Lake Biel’. As a result of the lower level of the lake, the ‘island’ can be reached by road and is about 25 km southwest of Biel. Alternatively you can take a boat trip or an archaeological guided tour. Rousseau’s room can be visited in the hotel restaurant, which was originally an 1127 monastery.
