The St Peter Fountain, the work of Stephan Amman, dates from 1592 and until the end of the 19th century was located in nearby George Python Square and in close proximity to the former St Peter’s Chapel. It now stands in front of the Civic Hospital and the present octagonal basin dates from the relocation. The statue of St Peter is based on a Corinthian capital, on which four cherubs stand on balls, and was inspired by the work of leading sculptor Hans Gieng. The column bears two coats of arms and is decorated with raised arabesques.
