The magnificent Gothic St Nicholas Cathedral was built in the period 1283-1490, on the site of an ancient Romanesque chapel. Its impressive 76 metre (249 feet) bell tower dominates the skyline and you can climb the 368 steps for a view of the city and the Fribourg Pre-Alps. Highlights are the stained glass windows by Jozef Mehoffer (1896-1936), a series completed by Alfred Manessier (1976 and 1988) and the famous organ by Aloys Mooser (1828-1834), which claimed the attention of Franz Liszt and Anton Bruckner. The cathedral has 13 bells and the ‘Last Judgement’ relief over the main portal is another feature.
