St Meinrad, a Benedictine monk, became a hermit in 835 and lived in the Etzel forest; he set a pattern, followed by other hermits, which culminated in the foundation of the Einsiedeln Abbey (see separate entry). Legend has it that he was murdered by two robbers who were chased by his two pet ravens to Zürich and arrested and executed. The story is told by frescos in the St Meinrad Chapel, built 9 km north of Ensiedeln on the Etzelpass in 1697/8 to the design of Kaspar Moosbrugger (1656-1723), the architect of the present Einsiedeln Abbey. The adjacent pilgrimage guesthouse dates from 1759.
