The St Martin’s Church in Zillis, located approximately 33 km south of Chur, is a Swiss cultural asset of major importance. The church was restored in the period 1938-1940 and its great treasure is the superbly painted 12th century ceiling in 153 panels depicting biblical scenes, which is in almost perfect condition. It is the oldest complete late Romanesque example in Western Europe and has a Romanesque frieze under the ceiling which was discovered in 1940. There is a museum where much more information is obtainable. The nave and tower of the church are early Romanesque and the choir is late Gothic.
