The church of St Martin’s in Altdorf (see separate entry) has one of the most valuable and important church treasuries in central Switzerland and, since 1982, this has been on public display in the parish centre of the town. Many of the objects are still in current use during church services and the collection includes gold and silver ritual objects, crucifixes, reliquary caskets and candles dating from the 16th to early 19th centuries. A large portion of the exhibits are gothic in origin and the variety is extraordinary considering the church was burnt down in 1400, 1693 and 1799.
