The existing late-gothic style St Martin’s Church was completed in 1491, on the foundations of an 8th century church destroyed by fire. In 1524, after John Comander, Zwingli’s ambassador, preached Reformed doctrine in his sermons here, the local bishop had him arraigned for heresy. Legend has it that Martin Luther also delivered a short speech here in the 1520s. The bell tower was added in 1509 and the south façade has three 1919 stained glass windows by Augusto Giacometti (1877-1947). The fountain in front of the church has a 1716 basin and a 1910 replica statue of a Roman soldier.
