The St Martin’s Parish Church in Altdorf was built after the devastating fire in 1799. It is regarded as one of the most attractive classicist style buildings in the Uri region and is constructed on foundations which date back more than 1,200 years. The 1596 St Anne’s chapel, which stands next to the church together with the Ölberkapelle (Mount Olive’s chapel), is the oldest religious building in Altdorf. The parish centre, which now houses the church treasury (see separate entry), was the former refuge for the poor and foreigners.
