The town of St Imier lies approximately 28 km west of Biel and it was the clock industry that transformed an agricultural village into an industrial town. Leonidas 1842, TAG-Heuer 1860, Longines 1866 and Breitling 1884, all established factories here. Three devastating fires in 1839, 1843 and 1856 destroyed most of the historic buildings of a town, which traces its history to the year 600. Of interest, apart from the Longines Museum (see separate entry), are the local museum, a mineral museum, the restored Collegial Church, St Martin’s Tower and the Observatory and Solar Power Station on Mont Soleil.
