The St George Fountain, which dates from 1522/25, stands in front of the Fribourg town hall. The sculpture is of outstanding quality and depicts St George on horseback slaying the dragon; it is the only stone sculpture by Hans Geiler. It is made of St Triphon marble from Aigle, whilst the octagonal basin is of Solothurn limestone. The twisted column and composite capital are of Neuchâtel stone and were sculpted by Joseph Tschupphauer; the gilding was renewed by Gottfried Locher in 1759/61. The capital is decorated with acanthi and the winged heads of cherubs and the column with garlands.
