St Gallus was a disciple of St Columban and landed and settled in Arbon c.610. He died there around 646, having founded the monastery in the Arbon forest, from which the nearby town of St Gallen gets its name. The St Gallus Chapel, built as a memorial to him, is close to the castle and St Martin’s Catholic Church. The building dates from 1786/89 and replaced an old Roman basilica; next to the entrance is a stone which is alleged to have the ‘Footprint of the Holy Gallus’.
