St Anne was the patron saint of the Fribourg guild of tanners and the fountain which bears her name is located in the Place du Petit-St-Jean, near where the tanners lived. First reference to a fountain in this neighbourhood was in 1349, but the present fountain dates from 1557/59. The column is decorated with marine creatures carrying tanners’ tools, with musical cherubs and pilgrims above. The Corinthian capital is by Josef Tschupphauer and dates from 1760, as does the rectangular stone basin with bronze spouts. The typically Gothic sculpture portrays St Anne, the Virgin Mary and the child Christ.
