The village of Splügen, located on a ridge between the Splügen and San Bernardino passes, is at an altitude of 1,475 metres and some 51 km southwest of Chur. Mentioned for the first time in writing in 831, it is a popular summer and winter resort and was awarded the Wakker Prize in 1995 for its outstanding compromise between preservation and tourism. Highlights include striking stone houses, the 1690 parish church, the Säumerherberge Weiss Kreuz (a Swiss heritage site) and an interesting local museum. There are fortification ruins on Burg Splügen and ski-lifts to the Danatzhöhe at 2,160 metres.
