A Basel landmark and the most impressive of the three remaining city gates, the striking Spalentor was erected as part of the city fortifications in the late 14th century. It has stood alone since the city walls were demolished in the 19th century. The oak portcullis remains and the front of the gate originally had a drawbridge. The lower front gate is by Jakob Sarbach and dates from 1473/74, the humorous figures are copies from c.1893; the originals are in the Basel History Museum (see separate entry). Note the copy of the City Customs decree of 1795, a historic document.
