The village of Sils im Domleschg is located on the east bank of the Hinterrhein River, some 26 km southwest of Chur. It is at an altitude of 633 metres. First documented in 1149 as de Sillas, it includes the hamlets of Freihof, Campi and Albula. There are a number of listed Swiss heritage sites of national significance in the area, including to the south of the village, Carschenna with its prehistoric petroglyphs (images incised in rock). The other heritage sites are Burg Ehrenfels, the Hohenrätien Fortress ruins and the Campi ruins.
