Located on the northern shore of Lake Walen near Vorderbetlis, approximately 18 km northeast of Glarus, are the Seerenbach Falls, an imposing natural wonder. The Seerenbach thunders over the vertical cliff face cascading 585 metres in a series of stages down to Betlis to join the waters of the Rin Spring. The middle Seerenbach waterfall, with a vertical drop of 305 metres, is the highest waterfall in Switzerland and one of the highest in Europe. In spite of various expeditions, which have penetrated 1,000 metres into the core of the mountain, the source of the subterranean cavern system feeding the Rin remains a mystery.
