The town of Schwarzenburg is located approximately 19 km southwest of Berne and has a population of some 10,000. The castle (Schloss Schwarzenburg) dates from 1573 and is now a cultural centre and also has a museum; the Schwarzwasser Local Museum can be found at Leimern 5. The tiny 15th century Maria Magdalena church has a 17th century shingle-covered clock tower. There is an unusual gnome garden, a sculpture park with oversized concrete sculptures by the artist Jürg Ernst. The Grasburg, one of Switzerland’s most beautiful medieval castle ruins is nearby and has wonderful scenic views
