The Schwab Museum was opened in 1873 and is named after Colonel Schwab (1803-1869), a 19th century archaeologist who left the money and his collection to found the museum. Appropriately it is located on the road leading to the lake, for the museum exhibits archaeological relics of the prehistoric dwellings on the shores of Lakes Biel, Murten and Neuchatel. The museum takes you from early Stone Age to the Roman Era. The ‘Pictures of a City’ exhibition is another feature and the museum has published an archaeological guide, which takes visitors on a tour of the well-preserved medieval town centre.
