The Schaulager, opened in 2003, was designed by the distinguished Swiss architectural partnership of Herzog & de Meuron. Winners of the Pritzker Prize in 2001, they were responsible for the conversion of the Brookside Power Station in London into the Tate Museum of Modern Art. The Schaulager was commissioned by the Lawrenz Foundation, set up for this purpose by Maja Oeri, president of the vast Emanuel Hoffmann Foundation (see separate entry). It is a cross between a warehouse and museum; storing paintings not on loan, under ideal conditions but on display. The building is open to the general public, only during special exhibitions.
