The lovely village of Scharans is located some 25 km southwest of Chur, close to the junction of the Albula River with the Hinterrhein. First documented around 1200, it is the village where Jürg (Georg) Jenatsch (1596-1639) was pastor in 1617-18. A violent man, he became a Swiss political leader during the Thirty Years’ War who was eventually assassinated in Chur. Haus Bardill (formerly known as Haus Gees) is a Swiss heritage site and at nearby Fürstenau there are two castles which belonged to the Planta family. Baldenstein castle and the 13th century St Cassian’s chapel are close to Albula.
