The San Rocco Church, which faces on to the Piazza Indipendenza (see separate entry), was built on the foundations of an earlier 14th century church. It was restored in 1926 and the original façade paintings were erased and replaced by the striking fresco of San Rocco by Carlo Bonafedi; the bell tower was also raised at this time. There was further restoration in 1996-97. Internal highlights include frescos depicting the life of San Rocco and the altar front in three sections in ‘scagliola’ (stucco creating the effect of marble).
