The Samson Fountain in the Kramgasse is a particularly attractive creation by Hans Gieng. It portrays the biblical story of Samson, an Israelite who, on his way to marry his Philistine love, is attacked by and kills a lion with his superhuman strength. The fountain was built in 1544 and is modelled after the Simsonbrunnen in Solothurn. The fountain has an octagonal basin, an unusual and interesting column and the allegorical figure of Samson and the Lion is outstanding in its brilliant colours.
