The parish church of Saint-Germain was once a sanctuary dating back to the end of the Middle Ages that came under the patrimony of the Convent of Savoie. The building houses one of the jewels of baroque art in its chancel. This artwork, an altarpiece, was originally created during the middle of the 17th century. The church was a centre of catholic devotion in Lausanne after the Reformation. It is known that one of Assens’ parishioners was Jean-Jacques Rousseau, the Swiss philosopher, writer, and composer of the Enlightenment, whose political philosophy influenced the French Revolution.
