Restored in 1976, the Saint Alban Gate is one of the three remaining city gates of the original seven. The others still standing are: the Spalen Gate (Spalen Tor) (see separate entry) and the St Johann Gate (St. Johannstor). The gate dates from the 13th century, is 32 metres high and formed part of the city fortifications which were demolished in the 19th century. The watch house on the Rhine River side was added in 1871. You can see the massive wooden door and also the heavy posts which could be lowered for protection. There are lovely gardens and restored buildings around.
