The Sacred Heart Church in the northern part of Bellinzona was built between 1936-1939 and was a competition winning design by the local architects Rino Tami (1908–1994) and Carlo Tami (1898–1993). It was built for the Capuchin Order who wanted a building inspired by Romanesque architecture, but consistent with the simplicity of the order. The church, which is clad externally in rough-hewn irregularly bonded local stone, has a single nave with some impressive frescos depicting the Way of the Cross, by the Italian artist Guido Gonzato (1896-1955). It became a historic listed monument in 1986.
