Grand Duchess Anna Feodorovna Constancia, sister-in-law of Tsar Alexander 1st and aunt of Queen Victoria and Prince Consort Albert, lived in Geneva for many years. In 1859, when the many Orthodox Russians living in Geneva were given permission to build their church, she gave financial aid. The church is built on the site of a Benedictine priory, destroyed in the 16th century. Construction lasted three years and resulted in a masterpiece in the Byzantine Muscovite style. The superb gilded cupolas are, without doubt, a brilliant landmark. The interior is stunning and contains numerous icons of the 16th to 20th centuries.
