The Rütli meadow, regarded as the founder site of Swizerland, lies southeast of Seelisberg and northwest of Aldorf. It is on the banks of the Urnersee and is a car free area; it can only be visited by boat or on foot from the ‘Swiss Path’ (about an hour’s walk). Legend has it that in 1291 the deputies of the founder cantons met on this site and swore the oath of allegiance; it was visited by the Queen Elizabeth II in 1980 and is treated as a national sanctuary. There are three springs, a small museum and a restaurant; it is ideal place for a picnic.
