Aventicum was a thriving Roman town and, in 15 BC, became the capital of the Helvetii. Under Emperor Vespasian, in 71 or 72 AD, Aventicum was raised to the status of a colony. The ancient aqueducts, streets and sewers lie beneath modern Avenches. Visitors have access to a part of the town wall and the Tornallaz tower, the only surviving watchtower of 70 that used to surround the town. The baths in the forum, the Cigognier sanctuary, the Granges-des-Dimes temple, the amphitheatre and parts of the western gate are open to visitors free of charge. Information panels are set up on site.
