Archaeological excavations have uncovered a Roman quarter in Chur, which in the 4th century AD was the capital of their province of Curia. The site can be visited and the excavations have a protective shelter, designed in 1986 by the distinguished architect Peter Zumthor (b.1943), winner of the 2009 Pritzker Prize. Features include a wall painting, which has now been restored to its original position having being found on the floor of the larger building, and the charred remains, of Roman origin, of a wooden floor in the same building. Visitors can collect the key from the Rhaetian Museum (see separate entry).
